DJ Rolando's "Jaguar" is one of the greatest pieces of techno ever made...Its about Aztec warriors (link). Every string is a piece of heaven. It's beautiful, and I love it! - Earlier in the year, Sebastien Leger, released his 128 BPM progressive version of the track. It's gotten a lot of criticism for not being able to stand up to the original (or the Jeff Mills remix) and while I do agree with a lot of it, as a stand alone track; Leger made something that makes me feel good, and has worked really well whenever I've played it, and is pretty cool for what it is.

This post is flame bait and I'm biting. I think most of the criticism isn't whether the leger cover "stands up" to the original, so much as that it wasn't even at all necessary. It was just a cash-in option for leger that added nothing to the original. I'm still unsure of whether or not Rolando and Mike get paid royalties off the sales of leger's version, and if they don't, well that's just a crime. Anybody with half a brain realizes the original is a timeless classic and the cover is just a cheap ripoff. Whether it makes you "feel good" and "worked really well" is pretty far from relevant.

Please, you can give any other tracks but you can not give for free Jaguar. It's sacred, you do not download Underground Resistance or any related labels for free. You got to respect the artist's work, especially when it is so pure and beautiful like Knight Of The Jaguar is.
I know it's only 192kbps, but still, the track can be listen almost everywhere on the internet, youtube for example. You don't have to give it.

So because every blogger on the internet give the track you have to do it too ? I don't read the others blogs you mention, and I don't use rapidshare or else for downloading music.
I just say you don't have to give the original Jaguar to say "hey, I like the motherfu**** crappy Leger's version, it makes me feel good". If you want to educate people to good music you can do it without giving a track for free in a crappy encodage. You have to respect Underground Resistance, you have to buy theyre records, you have to support related labels/artists, because they've created something beautiful. And if you like it, you don't download it, or you're as pathetic as Sebastien Leger.

You are aware original is a little less than 138 BPM and most of today's techno djs never reach that speed, yes? - Leger's track is not as good but he produced it for himself and released it after demand!
@jean baptiste - never heard of pitch control? i hear they're making them these days with extreme settings like +32% with pitch correction even, not just +/-8! see, it goes both ways too. :P
in all seriousness, the tempo of a cut at 0 pitch is a complete non-issue. a great dj can work any cut in to certain effect, it just takes finesse and a little foresight.

@ Leif - i'm not going to comment on Leger's "remake". HOWEVER...
most anyone who made a song (as you say, "for any reason") wouldn't want their shit given away on a blog without their permission, which is *exactly* what's happening here.
quite possibly TWICE, since it is POSSIBLE (though not probable) that Leger is paying royalties.
i've got no problem downloading mashups, and non-officially released tracks from this site, but this is a clear case of taking money out of someone's pocket...especially someone as respectable as the UR crew.
additionally, know a little bit about that of which you speak before you pick a battle. Rolando and/or the UR crew give approximately less than a fuck about being "popular" or "mainstream". it is well documented.
you really do not want any part of an intellectual battle with CZ. he has forgotten more than you'll ever know about dance music, and will bend you over a chair in the "not good" way.
@leif - I am pretty sure Rolando/Mike and Sony managed to work something out regarding the mishap with Sony's initial release of Jag, and I'm somewhat sure that Mike (reluctantly?) gave Leger his blessing too. I never said anything about whether it benefits or harms UR to post the track.
I don't think Mike and crew are crying about getting paid, but they obviously have never gone out of their way to make hits. They do what they do because they have to, they do what they do as a community of ghetto guys in detroit. That's straight truth.

this is an 8 year-old track and that's largely unknown by people reading palms out or discobelle or big stereo or whatever blog!! and it's available for download all over the internet. even with a video, the majority of the blog generation wouldn't be familiar with this track and wouldn't spend a dime on it regardless.
so let me ask you all:
given the views of underground resistance, do think they would take priority? a track (readily pirated on the internet) given away to people who wouldn't buy the track or their message being passed down to a new audience years later?

coool. i really just wanted to start that discussion because both our blog and his puts up many musician's work. cz, do you get permission for every song on your blog? i personally appreciate it when i see someone has plugged my track. and as someone involved with blogging, producing, and distribution, it's interesting to note that the tracks that get blogged the most are the ones that sell the most digitally. so, the more the original track is promoted, legally or not, the more pennies they get
@leif - Huh? What? My blog is decidedly NOT an mp3 blog. I've posted only two complete tracks ever. One I posted on the day after the election and admittedly I did not ask Ce Ce Rogers nor Marshall Jefferson permission to post it. The other track I posted was given directly to me for the express purpose of posting it by Tampopo, whom I featured in a lengthy interview. I made the decision early on to not make mine just another free mp3 blog. There are plenty of those out there.

@leif - It's pretty long standing that promotional dj mixes are by and large acceptable to most artists as reasonably fair use. Honestly, though, your pathetic attempt at making me look foolish grows tiresome. I didn't comment on this post to get into a fight over internet mp3 sharing. I never begrudged you your mp3 giveaway posts, so arguing about that is pointless. I only commented that leger's cover of jaguar is unnecessary bullshit, the original was nearly flawless and couldn't really be improved upon. End of story.
