Sample Wednesday 6: Bad Boy

We all miss Big. Thankfully, Puffy pretty much stopped making his "solo" music. As far as I remember, it was Puff's fault (and maybe little bit Vanilla Ice's too) that sample clearance became such a big issue in the mainstream media. The man seriously ripped people off. And the songs he stole usually weren't even particularly old. I don't have a moral problem with it; my only gripe is that now you have to pay 25 grand to put a beatbox rendition of Salt N Peppa's "Push It" in a film. Thanks to Scott for 6 of todays 16 selections, he's the tough looking character posing for pegleg's new spring line.

Mtume - "Juicy Fruit"
from Biggie's "Juicy"
Screaming Jay Hawkins - "I Put a Spell on You"
from Biggie's "Kick in the Door"
Zapp - "More Bounce to the Ounce"
from Biggie's "Going Back to Cali"
The Delfonics - "Hey Love"
from Biggie's "Player Hater"
Herb Alpert - "Rise"
from Biggie's "Hypnotize"
Less McCann - "Valantra"
from Biggie's "10 Crack Commandments"
Ohio Players - "Singing in the Morning"
from Biggie's "Ready to Die" & "Gimme the Loot"
Liquid Liquid - "Cavern"
from Biggie's "Nasty Boy"
Oliver Sain - "On the Hill"
From Biggie ft. Jay-Z & Puffy "Young G's"
Diana Ross - "I'm Coming Out"
from Biggie ft. Puffy & Mase "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems"
Sylvia Striplin - "You Can't Turn Me Away"
from Junior M.A.F.I.A's "Get Money"
Kool & the Gang - "Hollywood Swinging"
from Ma$e's "Feel So Good"
Grandmaster Flash & the Furious 5 - "The Message"
from Puffy & Ma$e's "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down"
Lisa Stansfield - "Been Around the World"
from Puffy's "Been Around the World"
David Bowie - "Let's Dance"
from Puffy's "Been Around the World"
Love Unlimited Orchestra - " I Did It For Love"

This is a really great idea. Kudos. Kudos. There should be much more of this sort of thing. Don't forget The Police's "Every Breath You Take," and also from Can't Nobody Hold Me Down, hmm, isn't that a lyric from some Culture Club or Boy George song or something of that ilk?

I fucking hate Puff Daddy. Can I say fucking on this blog? Cause if there is anyone I hate its Puff Daddy...well I might hate Fiddy Cent more but its a close run on who is doing more to destroy hip hop.

not sure if its my computer (it probably is cuz its junk) but for some reason all that i got from the zapp and delfonics tracks were 4 second clips. other than that, amazing post. this blog is my drug of choice.

Great work. Even though you are right, Puffy didn't really sample so much as steal, you still put in a ton of work finding all of these tracks and posting them. Thanks so much.

Seeing this list proves to me that Puff Daddy has no creative ability. I love the Notorious B.I.G. album "Ready to Die", its very enjoyable to listen to. But finding out that 50%+ of the beats on that album were simply taken from other artists and slightly modified is quite disappointing. I already knew that Puffy was worthless at rapping, and now I've learned that he's a completely unoriginal producer. It astounds me how he has made it so far in his industry.

Liquid Liquid's Cavern sounds awfully like White Lines. Or White Girls if you like horribly made parody songs.
