Sounds of Summer 12 - SHADOW DANCER!!

Crikey have we got a treat for you tonight! Our latest mix comes from a couple of guys who have swiftly become one of the most respected duos since peas and carrots; knocking up a number of critically acclaimed EP's on Boys Noize Records before firmly stamping their name on the electronic music world with the hugely successful and equally imaginative 'Golden Traxe' LP. The influences on display throughout this mix are outrageously diverse; spanning DJ Krush to Squarepusher, via Peter Gabriel (obviously)...which is unsurprising when the mix comes in at an evening-filling 150 minutes! Fresh from dates in the Far East, the perennially busy pairing found time to put together a wonderfully crafted and well thought out soundtrack to a lazy summer evening....sit down, be patient on the DL (it's worth it) and enjoy SHADOW DANCER!!

FOR REASONS THAT WILL SOON BECOME APPARENT; WE'VE HAD TO CHANGE THE LINKED FILE WITH THE ORIGINAL ZIP THAT SHADOW DANCER SENT US. We'll get things back up and running behind the scenes as soon as possible, and will let y'all know the problems even sooner. Enjoy!

Sounds of Summer 10 - DESTROY DISCO!!

So we've managed to get into double figures with our Summer music push (with the exception of 03; which we're assured is going to be the best, if not most delayed, mix in history) and we've decided to go Southern Hemisphere! Sounds of Summer 09 - SHINICHI OSAWA!!

It seems that the summer is back with a vengeance over here; it's very rare we Brits get hotter weather than Tenerife...and yet still 80% of the population wonder why they get sunburnt when they sit outside all day without suncream. The other 20% moan that it's now 'too hot'. Todays mixtape is more soothing than a bottle of camomile on your peeling, chargrilled skin - a real trip through some obscure but ultimately beautiful noises, held together with a thread of summer vibes. It comes to you from Japan's most famed producer; a man who is currently touring America on the back of numerous huge releases on labels like Southern Fried and Dim Mak under his new guise; whilst his past reveals a hugely succesful and eclectic musical career in his homeland. This all contributes to the most relaxing Sounds of Summer mix we've posted yet - so put your headphones on, reserve your space in the sun and drift away to SHINICHI OSAWA!

When up Against a Wall

We thank you for your NRG and bearish good looks.
R.I.P. Billy

I heard that if you go into a bathroom by yourself, with a phone, pop rocks, and root beer. And turn off the light and mix the pop rocks with the root beer, then click your heels together three times each time saying, "Billy Mays, Hays!" And then call within the next ten minutes you'll see Billy Mays using OrangeGlo to clean the mirror, from the other side!

And then when you turn the light on the pop rocks and root beer will be safe to drink.

Hot on the heels of his last release, for Claude Von Stroke's Dirtybird imprint, he releases another wonderful song "The Big Stef" on his and Mowgli's Deadfish label. Sounds of Summer 07 - URCHINS!

So next up in our Summer Mixtape Amnesty is one by.....ourselves! (Attempting not to fall into third person here) After telling everyone else to do "summer themed mixtapes" I suppose it was only fair that we delivered a mix ourselves - and we've crammed it full of old funk, jazz and motown with a sprinkling of shamefully cheesy 90's house and a couple of chillout tunes to finish you off. We've been really pleased with the project so far, hopefully our mix works really well in the sunshine; it certainly helped that the weather was lovely here whilst we were making it! This mix was supposed to be promoting our Potty Mouth EP, which has unfortunately been delayed and will be upon the world in July now. It's been a long time coming so we're hyped about it seeing daylight! We're working on an EP with Spoek at the minute too, so keep em peeled! Feeling slightly strange about talking about ourselves this much, so check out the mix and hopefully it tells you a little bit more about what we want to hear during the summer months! Check our myspace and twitter as well.....

Sounds of Summer 06 - LOUIS LA ROCHE!!

They say 'Young Love' is one of the finer things to enjoy during the summer months, and that is something that our next mixtape aurator should know all about. At just 18, this guy has redefined a French house scene that has been quietly simmering on the outskirts of music lovers' conciousness for the best part of a decade. Taking delightfully unspoilt 70's Soul samples and turning them into modern tracks sounds simple enough - but turning them into bonafide modern classics that would stand alongside the very same producers that inspired you is something else! With a mixtape that couldn't be more designed for summer if it was made out of ice cream; we're proud to bring you....LOUIS LA ROCHE!!

Louis La Roche - "Sounds of Summer mix 06"

Sounds of Summer 05 - HIS MAJESTY ANDRE!!

Just like you can't get away from hayfever during the summer months; we're not letting you get away from quality mixtapes either! Granted, we might not stop you sneezing, itching your eyes and generally feeling like you've grown allergic to EVERYTHING outdoors...but we certainly know how to satisfy your ears in the meantime. Up next is a guy that has absolutely blown up in the past year - a feat highlighted by a huge release on Cheaper Thrills and, in my humble opinion, the best Minimix in Radio 1 history. A bold statement - but listen to it and try NOT to smile. Difficult! Things show no sign of slowing down; a collaboration with Bloody Beetroots is rapidly rising to the top of everyone's 'must have' tracklist. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you HIS MAJESTY ANDRE! Next up.....LOUIS LA ROCHE!

After teh Crucifixion

A few years ago I was working at a hotel making minimum wage and I was called into my boss' office at work. He told me that the hotel could do drug testing at anytime...

"Chuck, I think it's a great idea! We need to keep razor sharp and I am vehemently against anything that might dull the team. You have my approval to go ahead with this measure!" I reach out to shake his hand.

Chuck's hand stays on his lap. He bows his head to look through the top of his bifocals. "Joee, it already is a rule, Im just reminding you of it."
"Oh. Um OK. Would you like me to get tested after work?"
He shook his head no. "That wont be necessary."

I had a few minutes before the start of my shift so I went outside for a cigarette. My supervisor was there. "Jon, Chuck just 'reminded' me that I could get drug tested 'at any time.' Do you have any idea why I would be pulled into the boss' office and informed of this?"
"Well, Joee, people talk."
"And?"
"Someone said they saw you doing cocaine in the bathroom."

My eyes must have popped out of my head. I hadn't touched coke since the last time it went up my nose and that certainly wasn't at work, much less that year. Now "someone" was saying they saw me doing it at work?

"They saw what?!"
"Someone said they say you doing cocaine in the bathroom."
He didnt get the rhetoric in the question.
"Who?"
"I cant say."
"Bullshit! Who the fuck said it!"
"Joee, I really cant say. Sorry."
"Jon, let me ask you something."
"Sure."
"Who said it?"
"Joee, I..."
"'Can't say'. Why would I do that here? This place is so slow that it'd be the worst idea!
"It was just a reminder."
"But why would someone say that? What else have you heard?"
"Just that."

The next day I went into work and was called into Chuck's office again. He asked me to close the door. He composed himself, took a deep breath and exhaled the following sentence: "Joee you know the women's locker room is for women only."

I stare at Chuck with a deadpan face.
"Well?"
"Yes, I do know that."
"Someone said they saw you in the women's locker room in a compromising position with Iva."
"Who is Iva?"
"The new Russian housekeeper."
"I'm shocked and stunned."
"You're shocked and stunned that someone would say this?"
"I'm shocked and stunned that I haven't been introduced to a Russian housekeeper, who would fuck me at work."

I was "let go" the next week.

TC 1991 - "Berry"

Sounds of Summer 04 - A1 BASSLINE!!

Last week saw a dip in our Summer mixtape-athon (and concurrently the weather); for which we can all only apologise and work profusely hard to make it up this week! First up is a chap who seems to have found his way firmly on to the front page of remixers for any self respecting label looking for a big bassy remix. One would like to say it's because his name notoriously puts him first in the Yellow Pages, but it's probably more to do with his outrageously consistent style. Serving up a garage-tastic summer mix with a few belters for good measure, and offering up a different style of Summer Goodness than we've previously featured, we give you...A1 BASSLINE! Also this week we're bringing you His Majesty Andre and Louis La Roche; keep em locked!

Atomly - Geisterbahnhoefe

Over the last decade, Atomly, has released on Wolf + Lamb, Carpark, Fear, and his own label, Atomiq. He's DJed and performed his Live PA around the world to crowds of revelers. And through these past ten years, he's crossed genres from IDM and Breakcore to Dubstep, Micro House, and Techno, while keeping a feel that is very much him.

His latest release, Geisterbahnhoefe, was made at his Bushwick home, better known as Fat Camp, after taking the time to relax and reflect his travels.

"The party doesn't get interesting until 5am."

Geisterbahnhoefe opens with the spacey shuffle oriented techno track, "Pinched". "Sublingual" is a deep house track that walks the line into what is almost dub disco. My personal favorite is "Crave" (below) with its Berghain train sounds the track takes me on a trip right where I wanna go. The EP closes with a very cool 104bpm mindwarp called "20,000 Leagues".

Atomly - "Crave" [B1]

Geisterbahnhoefe will be available on 12" and digital via Atomiq

Sounds of Summer 02 - SIDECHAINS

Next up in our Summer music drive is a name that has been catching eyes and ears around the world for the past few months whilst spearheading the "filter-nu-house-diso-french-revivalist" movement. Take a look at the tracklist before you listen, and you know it's going to be something special - this mix has got more classics than the British Library and more funk than a gallon of James Brown's manjuice. I've had a listen on a gloomy Thursday night whilst watching sixteen nobodies grasp hopelessly at fame and yet it felt like I was in Rio. In 1999.

It's safe to say that this should be on your iPod's allllll summer... ladies and gentlemen - SIDECHAINS! Check back on Tuesday for 03 - Jaymo and Andy George! Tracklist after the jump...

Sounds of Summer 01 - FOAMO

Today marks the (un)official launch of Summer 2009 - with our Sounds of Summer mixtape project! Whether you want music for the beach, beats before the club or simply something to listen to whilst you're yearning to be outside tanning it up; over the next 13 weeks we'll be keeping your ears well and truly occupied.

We could think of no better way to start the series than with a mix from one of our favorite producers - an all-round nice guy whose been rising faster than recent BBQ sales since we gave you the exclusive on his defining remix of Mystery Jets, this past Autumn. Foamo now finds himself incredibly in demand; with a summer calendar peppered with residency slots in the Chew The Fat room at Space, Ibiza - and we're super pleased he managed to find time to put together a collection of sure-fire seasonal anthems. Enjoy, and don't forget to check out Sounds of Summer 02 - Sidechains, coming this Friday!!

Spectral Spring

Spectral Sound has announced that Matthew Dear (aka Audion) and Ryan Elliot will be taking over A&R for the label. This is great news for fans of the dancefloor-oriented leg of Ghostly as their direct involvement will bring a new edge to the already seminal label.

It's been three years since Alan Abraham's has released under the Bodycode moniker and next week Spectral will release the single "What Did You Say" from the new album, Immune, which is due a month from now.

As Audion, Dear is also releasing his next album, one track at a time. "I Am The Car" was the first, followed by Look At The Moon. He also has a new live set that will debut at Berghain on June 26th.
